Lavenham, Suffolk

On our last day in England we decided to take a leisurely drive up north of Essex to Suffolk and the town of Lavenham. The town is noted for its half-timber medieval buildings. It was interesting to contrast these buildings with those found in Bruges from the same time period.


What amazed us is that while these buildings look as if they are ready to fall down, they are all still in use and seem to be holding up just fine. After a relaxed outdoor lunch at the Angel Hotel we strolled around the antique shops and art galleries before deciding to have a formal afternoon tea in one of the old tea rooms.
I must say I sort of 'get' afternoon tea now. With the weather being often chilly and dinner usually coming around 8:00 in the evening, you need something to warm you up and tide you over. A nice pot of tea with warm scones, butter, jam and cream is the way to go. It was great and the perfect way to wrap up our time in England and begin thinking about the trip home.
